Today, let's
ready for our remote study of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn.
Remember that history provides the narrative, so let's
relook at the historical setting of the work, the period
called
Realism (a reaction to Romanticism).
Please watch a
magnificent film by Ken Burns called "American Lives: Mark
Twain." Watch both parts 1 and 2 to get a sense
of the voice behind the characters.
You can access
the films on:
Amazon Prime
AppleTV
DailyMotion
nineNetwork (scroll to bottom of the page to
the photo of Twain)
Please make a
list of eight to ten bullets that provide new insights and
understandings the documentary provided you. Consider
how Twain's history, biases, experiences appear in the
novel. Send those insights by Wednesday, start
of class. |

Bullet list due today by 8 AM. |
Wed
03/18 |
Exposition: Exposition is key to our sense of the world in
the novel, what it looks like, when it occurred, who
inhabits it. It grounds the reader into the place of
the narrative. How does Twain create a sense of time, place and
character from the very start of the novel? Reread Chapter
1 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Read
the work and really try to get to know Huck. What are
the attributes of Huck's character? What makes Huck a
qualified narrator of this work? What attributes does
Huck evidence that makes him effective voice for this
odyssey? |
